Make Your Own Scrying Mirror

By | January 12, 2017

We had a blast creating these adorable scrying mirrors, and you can too!

Materials Needed:

– Picture frame with glass, any size. (We used 5″ x 5″)
– 1 can of high gloss black spray paint
– Acrylic paints (any colors you choose)
– Paint brushes or sponges
– Fine powdered glitter (optional)
– Rub-on transfers (optional)
– Clear acrylic spray (a good idea if you’ll be handling your mirror a lot so the paint doesn’t rub off)

How to Make Your Own Scrying Mirror:

Scrying MirrorsThe process for creating these is so simple and fun. First, remove the glass from the picture frame, and place in a well-ventilated area. Spray a light, even coat of high gloss black spray paint over the glass. Let dry for 12 hours. Apply another coat, and let dry for another 12 hours.

Now comes the fun part! Decorate your frame any way you like, painting on symbols or abstract shapes using the brushes or sponges – or even just smear the paint all over and make a rainbow effect. For a shimmery effect, use metallic based paints.

While the paint is still wet, you can sprinkle on some glitter to make it sparkle. Then let the frame dry completely. You can then use the rub-on transfers either on the glass, or the frame itself.

Once the frame is dry, top it off with some clear acrylic spray to protect the finish. Let that dry, and you’re done!

Put the glass back into the frame, either with the painted side up (which makes a solid black surface to gaze into), or with the painted side down (which gives more “depth” to the glass, so you peer into it further).

Here are some more pictures:

This one was named “Earth” because it had lovely pastel colors sponged and swirled along the frame.

This one was named “Night Sky” because it had the rub-on transfers of clouds and stars, a metallic gold paint wash on the frame, and plenty of sparkly glitter!

Just have fun with the creative process, do whatever works for you. There are no right or wrong ways to do this, as long as you end up with a mirror you’ll love and use.

Happy Scrying! 🙂
